Doomscrolling is a fitness problem

Scrolling and skipped workouts are the same problem: both are decided in the same ten minutes, and one of them takes no effort. Research on friction is encouraging: switching on Apple's own Screen Time limits reduced phone use over six weeks with no money and nothing installed, and a short pause before an app opens cut how often people opened it by 57%.

Two things you probably believe about yourself: you are not training as much as you should, and you spend too long on your phone. They are usually the same sentence.

Not because scrolling is a moral failing. Because both are decided in the same ten minutes, and one of them requires nothing from you.

How much workout time does scrolling actually cost?

Don’t take a statistic for this one. Open Settings, look at yesterday evening, and compare it with the session you meant to do.

That number is more persuasive than any average, because averages let you off. A national figure is about other people. Your Tuesday evening is about you, and it is usually the length of the workout you skipped, spent in fifteen-minute pieces you do not remember choosing.

Why does scrolling win at 6pm?

Because at 6pm you are not choosing between scrolling and training. You are choosing between something that costs nothing and something that costs getting changed, leaving the house, and being slightly uncomfortable for forty minutes.

Framed that way it isn’t a willpower failure, it’s an arithmetic one. The phone is the cheapest thing in the room, so it wins by default. And it wins quietly, one “just five minutes” at a time, until the window has closed and the decision has made itself.

This is also why motivation fails sooner or later. Wanting does not change the price of starting.

What friction actually does, according to the research

The encouraging part is that the effect does not need to be large to matter.

Start with the cheapest version there is. People who were simply encouraged to switch on Apple’s own Screen Time limits used their phones measurably less over six weeks. No money, no app, nothing installed. A limit they set themselves, and could remove at any moment, still worked.

That is the finding worth sitting with, because it kills the usual excuse. The constraint was self-imposed and escapable, and it still changed what they did.

A second study puts a number on how small the cost can be. In a peer-reviewed trial of 280 people, one sec, an app that adds nothing but a short pause before a chosen app opens, cut how often people opened it by 57% over six weeks. Not how long they spent. How often they reached.

So a small cost at the moment of reaching changes behaviour, which is the opposite of how most people try to fix this: resolving harder in advance.

One thing neither study shows, and it matters: nobody has demonstrated that the reclaimed time becomes exercise. Friction removes the competition. It does not supply the motivation. Anyone selling a blocker as a fitness fix is skipping that step.

Does deleting the apps work?

Usually not, and the reason is structural rather than a lack of resolve.

Deleting is a decision you make once, at a moment when you feel strong, and undo in fifteen seconds at a moment when you don’t. There is no cost to reinstalling, and you’ll eventually do so because these apps genuinely do things you want: messages from people you like, the group chat, the dopamine when you get bored or overwhelmed. So the deletion creates real losses that argue for its own reversal every day until you give in.

What survives is a rule that runs without you, so a tired version of you before work or a bad mood on a rainy morning never gets a vote on it.

Whatever you pick, ask what happens in week nine

The largest experiment ever done on getting people to exercise tested 54 different programmes on more than 60,000 gym members at once. Each lasted four weeks.

During those four weeks, 45% of them worked. Four weeks later, 8% did.

A 30-day challenge finishes on day 30, which is roughly when the novelty was going to run out anyway. And when a new behaviour takes a median of 66 days to feel automatic, a system that expires at day 28 quits three weeks before you would have stopped needing it.

So the question to ask of any tool, including Dare: will it still be running in week nine?

The version of this we built

One honest paragraph, then you can decide.

Dare treats screen time and training as one budget rather than two habits. You commit to a real goal, with a deadline: a daily step count, exercise minutes, active calories, or a bedtime. Apple Health checks it, so there is no button to press and nothing to negotiate with it when your deadline gets close. Miss the deadline and the apps you nominated lock until you make it up, or for however long you set.

The reasoning behind that is a timing problem. Training pays you back slowly, and mostly where you can’t see it. The phone pays you back before you have finished sitting down. Every evening you are choosing between those two payouts, and the fast one wins on timing alone, whatever you decided in the morning.

So the consequence has to arrive on the same timescale as the temptation. A pause you can tap through is the gentlest version of that, and it works. Dare is the strict end of the same principle: the way past a lock isn’t a tap, it’s doing the thing you said you’d do. It is also the only version where finishing the session is the thing that pays out tonight.

It is not a blocker on a schedule, and it is not the growing category of apps where one to five minutes of reps buy you screen time. The scroll isn’t a reward you earn; it’s the thing you lose. That suits you if the honest answer to “what did you do instead of training” is this, and doesn’t if your evenings are already fine and the problem is something else.

If you’d rather not use anything: the transferable part is that a rule you cannot renegotiate beats an intention you renew every morning. Set the target embarrassingly low, put a deadline on it, and make skipping cost something you’ll actually feel.

No claim is made here that reducing screen time increases exercise. The friction studies measure phone use, and that is what they are cited for.

Does screen time actually affect how much you exercise?

They compete for the same window. Most missed workouts are not decided in the morning, they are decided in the ten minutes after you sit down, and scrolling is the thing that wins those ten minutes because it needs no preparation at all. The clearest evidence is not a study, it is your own Screen Time figure for yesterday evening set against the workout you meant to do.

Do app blockers help you exercise more?
