FAQ

Fair questions,
straight answers.

Everything people ask before they put something on the line.

What is Dare?
Dare is an accountability app for iPhone that locks the apps you choose when you miss a fitness goal you set: daily steps, daily exercise minutes, a daily active-calorie target, or a bedtime. Goals are verified automatically through Apple Health, and the lock lifts as soon as you make the goal up.
How does Dare lock my apps?
Dare uses Apple's built-in Screen Time technology (Family Controls) to restrict the apps you selected when a goal is missed. You choose exactly which apps are on the line. Dare never picks for you, and emergency calling is never affected.
How does Dare verify my goals?
Dare reads steps, workouts, and active energy directly from Apple Health. There is no manual logging, no photo proof, and no self-reporting. Verification is automatic and sensor-based, so it cannot be gamed by tapping a button.
What goals can I set?
Four at launch, all daily: steps (hit a step count every day), exercise (Apple's Exercise-ring minutes, where a brisk walk counts), Move (an active-calorie target, most accurate with an Apple Watch), and bedtime (your apps go to bed before you do and unlock when you wake). You can set a different target for each day of the week.
What happens when I miss a goal?
The apps you put on the line lock until you make the goal up. Finish the walk or log the workout, and they unlock automatically the moment you catch up. Hit your goals on time and nothing ever locks.
Can I really earn a free month?
Yes, and it is not a free trial or a prize draw. If you are on a yearly plan and you meet every one of your goals on every day they were scheduled for four consecutive weeks, you can claim one free month, up to three per subscription year. Two things are worth being plain about: a week only counts if the target you set was at least the target Dare suggested from your own recent activity, so lowering your goals to collect the reward does not work; and a paused rest week neither counts toward the four nor breaks your run. We send the code by email after you claim it.
Can I cheat Dare?
Not realistically. Verification comes from Apple Health sensor data rather than self-reporting: steps, Exercise minutes, active energy, and sleep. There is no "mark as done" button to lie to.
What if I genuinely cannot make it one day?
Dare has flexibility built in: bank a rest day and spend it when needed, move a scheduled session to another day, or pause everything for a rest week. All before the deadline, all without a lock.
Do I need an Apple Watch?
No. Steps and workouts are read from your iPhone and Apple Health. An Apple Watch makes the Move (active-calorie) goal more accurate, but it is not required.
Is my health data private?
Your health data is read through Apple Health only to verify the goals you set. It is never used for advertising and never sold. Activity metrics and your goal history sync to your own private account so they survive a reinstall; the apps you choose to lock stay on your device as opaque Apple tokens we never see. See our Privacy Policy for the full detail.
How is Dare different from app blockers and habit trackers?
App blockers restrict your phone on a schedule; habit trackers count streaks and hope you care. Dare connects the two: your apps stay open as long as you keep the promise you made, and lock only when you break it. The consequence is conditional on your real-world behavior. That is what makes it work.
Can I lock apps I need for work?
You can, but you should not. You choose every app on the line, so keep work, banking, health, and safety apps off it. Dare is a commitment device for distractions, not a cage, and emergency calling is never affected.
Is Dare on Android?
No. Dare is iPhone-only. It is built on Apple Health and Apple Screen Time, which have no Android equivalent.
